Cord Blood Donation Criteria
In recent years there has discovered that the blood contains large numbers of stem cells that can be used to cure some diseases which hitherto had a very difficult treatment, such as leukemia and other disorders of the bone marrow.
Stem cells from umbilical cord blood, by their degree of immaturity, can be adapted easily to any body, which reduces the problems of incompatibility is in any kind of transplant.
Faced with such great potential therapeutic has been developed in recent years the creation of banks umbilical cord blood that logically require the donation of mothers who have just one child.
In Spain, the donation and storage of cord blood are regulated and controlled by the National Organization for Transplants, which oversees banks umbilical cord blood and the records of... (Read more)

The umbilical cord blood helps to regenerate the brain
By injecting umbilical cord blood in laboratory rats elderly, researchers at the University of South Florida (United States) have found improvements in the microenvironment of the hippocampus region of the brain of animals and a subsequent rejuvenation of neural progenitor stem cells . The results of their study are published in the digital edition of BMC Neuroscience.

"The neurogenesis of brain cells drops dramatically with increasing age, mostly by an impoverishment of the brain microenvironment," explained Alison Willing, an author of the study. "The increase in neurogenesis we get seems to be due to a decrease in inflammation."
Before this study, other research found that the USF reducing neuroinflamación in older rats by blocking the sy... (Read more)

Does the transplant of umbilical cord blood is still experimental?
The use of primary cells of cord blood for transplantation holds great promise but this area of medical science is still mostly experimental. Only in 1988, French researchers performed the first successful transplant with primary cells with cord blood. The transplant was taken from a newborn to a brother five years with a syndrome that included severe anemia skeletal defects (Fanconi anemia). Since then, cord blood donor with family relationship or wrongly, has been successfully transplanted into approximately 2,000 people worldwide. Doctors of the Mattel Children's Hospital of the University of California, Los Angeles, recently reported that three youths treated for life-threatening immunodeficiencies (lymphoproliferative syndrome linked to chromosome X and with Hyper IgM immunodeficiency... Ombilical Cord Blood
After the baby's birth, usually the umbilical cord is discarded along with the placenta. However, researchers have found that blood retrieved from the umbilical cord is a rich source of primary cells. The cells are primordial cells that produce non-specialists all other blood cells, including platelets and red blood cells coagulants and whites. Like the donated bone marrow, umbilical cord blood can be used to treat various genetic disorders affecting the blood and the immune system, leukemia and certain cancers, and some inherited disorders biochemists. To date, more than 45 disorders that can be treated with cells of primary umbilical cord blood.
Currently, there are commercial companies that offer a service to parents for the storage of cord blood from her baby. Prospective parents wh... (Read more)

Most people have had at least some exposure to the recent heated debates surrounding the use of human stem cells for research and treatment of disease. What individuals have had less exposure to is complete information regarding the availability of and resources for stem cells. Although we know how controversial the topic of harvesting stem cells from aborted fetuses can be, we are less aware of the alternate, and presumably less controversial, sources for stem cells. Human stem cells, in addition to being found in human bone marrow, are also found in the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants. The cord blood stem cell resource is perhaps the least known available... (Read more)

Umbilical cord blood, and the life saving stem cells it contains, has become a hotly debated topic involving laymen, medical professionals, and politicians alike. As parents make the decision to bank their newborn child?s umbilical cord blood, resources for stem cells become more available. Along with cord blood banking facilities, cord blood registry options have become available for individuals considering cord blood donation.

Stem cells found in human bone marrow have been used for years to treat diseases such as Leukemia, Lymphoma, Anemia, and Hodgkin?s disease, in addition to inherited diseases like Sickle Cell Disease and Tay Sachs Disease. Stem cells are have been successfully used to treat more than 45 different types of diseases! With the research currently under way regarding the use of stem cells, options for obtaining and storing this precious resource are being developed. There is only one opportunity to harvest a cord blood sample for cord blood banking and that is after the delivery of a newborn child. Once the umbilical cord and placenta have been discarded, the opportunity to collect a sample has passed. With the options for parents to donate their ch... (Read more)

Amidst the recent political debate regarding stem cell research, the importance of having access to this resource, for medical and research purposes, has gotten lost in the shuffle. Human stem cells have provided treatment for several different kinds of cancers and research is now being undertaken that may demonstrate the ability of stem cells to cure other diseases as well.
